Reading Log/ Reward Flames:
Students are expected to come to language arts every day with silent reading material. There will be a period of SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) each day, and if students ever have “extra” or “free” time in class, they are to be silently reading. Studies show that one of the best ways for students to build vocabulary is through reading!! :) Students can, if they want to, log their silent reading (both in class and at home) on the reading log, and when they finish a book, they bring their log to the teacher. The teacher initials the final entry for the book, and then gives the reader a dragon flame to fill out about the book. The reader fills out the flame, colors it, cuts it out, and displays it in the classroom. Each flame will earn a reader a $5 bonus on his/her weekly account paycheck! Here are the rules for earning a reward flame:
1. Reward flames can be earned for books only. No magazines, graphic novels, etc.
2. Books must be at least sixth grade reading level. If you are unsure if your book qualifies, ask the teacher.
3. The reading log must be filled out each time you read. If you bring me a log with only one entry, you will not earn a flame. I doubt you will have time to read an entire 6th grade reading level book in one sitting!
4. You may log silent reading that you do at home as well as at school.
5. You may log more than one book on your reading log. When you finish a book, draw a heavy dark line, and then begin logging your next book. When you run out of room, get a new log. (on the left top corner of the bookshelf under the chalkboard)
