Step 1: Put dull end of pencil into sharpener. NOTE: Do NOT put eraser end in!
Step 2: Grasp sharpener handle with right hand.
Step 3: Turn sharpener handle in clockwise motion.
Step 4: With left hand, pull pencil out to check lead sharpness.
Step 5: Blow any excess shavings off of pencil point.
Step 6: If not sharp enough, repeat process.
NOTE: YOU MAY NOT USE THIS TOPIC FOR YOUR SPEECH!!
You may use note cards during your speech.
Bonus Points: There are two ways you can earn extra points on your speech grade:
You will be giving a speech to the class that shows and tells how to do a simple task. For ideas of what to do your speech about, think about things you do every day, things you like to do, things you’re good at doing. The following are the criteria for the speech:
- 2-4 minutes long (5 pts): Your speech is to take no less than two minutes and no more than four minutes. You will be timed. *HINT* Practice giving your speech – to friends, to family, in the mirror. Get a good idea of how to pace yourself to meet the time limit.
- Speak clearly (diction) (5 pts): Your audience will need to be able to understand you. Sometimes when people have to speak in front of a group of others, they get nervous and mumble.
- Speak loudly (volume) (10 pts): Your audience will need to be able to hear you. Don’t let nervousness rob you of your voice! Also, don’t duck your head, or hold anything in front of your face while you speak. Both of those things muffle your voice. You need to be sure that even those the farthest away from you can hear you.
- Speak with appropriate tempo (10 pts): Again, your audience will need to be able to understand you. When people are nervous, they tend to speak very quickly (a subconscious attempt to get done fast so you can sit down and everyone will stop staring at you!) What could also happen is that you may have the timing of your speech down when practicing it, and then when you actually give it, you speed up, and don’t meet the minimum time limit. Slow your tempo down. Again – practicing your speech several times will help you achieve the correct pacing.
- Make good eye contact with the audience (10 pts): It is important that you don’t gaze at your note cards, props, the floor, or out the window while you’re talking. You are talking to PEOPLE, and it is only polite to look at them while speaking to them!
- Avoid “dead air” (5 pts): The purpose of public speaking is to speak to the audience. “Dead air” refers to a time during the presentation when the speaker is not saying anything. If you have dead air time, you will lose the interest and attention of your audience.
- Have at least 5 steps (5 pts): You will be telling AND showing your audience how to do something. You will need to give clear directions, and whatever you are demonstrating needs to contain at least five steps.
- Logical sequence (5 pts): Your steps/directions need to follow a sequence that makes sense. For instance, in the above example, you would not turn the sharpener handle before you inserted the pencil.
- Come prepared with materials to demonstrate (5 pts): Remember, you will be SHOWING your audience how to do the topic of your speech as well as telling them. Therefore, you have to have with you whatever you need to do your demonstration.
- Include a visual (20 pts total): You will be expected to have some kind of visual aid included in your speech. This could be a chart, a graph, a diagram, or a poster, or some other visual representation of the topic of your speech. THIS IS IN ADDITION TO THE MATERIALS YOU NEED TO ACTUALLY DO YOUR SPEECH. Your visual must do the following:
- Be related to the topic of your speech (2 pts)
- Be colorful (2 pts)
- Be used in your speech in some way (10 pts)
- Be large enough to be seen clearly by everyone, even those farthest away from you (2 pts)
- Be creative (4 pts)
- Be related to the topic of your speech (2 pts)
- Be prepared when called on (5 pts): Speeches are due _______________________. I will take volunteers first, and then call people randomly. There is a chance you won’t have to give your speech until the next day, as we won’t have time for them all on the due date; however, you might be chosen randomly, so you’d better be prepared!
- Listen quietly to others’ speeches (5 pts): Show others respect while they are speaking.
- Complete listening sheet (10 pts): Show that you received the information the speakers were giving.
You may use note cards during your speech.
Bonus Points: There are two ways you can earn extra points on your speech grade:
- Volunteer to give your presentation. It takes courage to voluntarily get up in front of a group of people and talk!
- Bring something related to your speech that you can hand out. If you bring enough for everyone (about 25 people), it will earn you even more points. :)
